The quick answer

The Steam listing advertises eight-player farming: one host and up to seven other players online. That desktop listing does not establish a player limit for every console or mobile edition.[1]

Check everyone’s game version

The official multiplayer guide says every player needs the same game version. Use the question-mark button on the title screen to find the displayed version.[2]

Check the host setup

Load the farm through Co-op, then Host. Ensure there are enough cabins for joining players. The older official cabin table covers two to four players; do not treat it as an eight-player configuration table.[2]
