For an unmodded Steam install, check for unexpected launch options first. The official guide also suggests trying the Compatibility beta branch, then switching back if it does not help. Modded installations need their own launcher configuration.[1]
Check the launch configuration
In Steam, open the game’s Properties and inspect Launch Options. The developer’s empty-field advice specifically applies when SMAPI is not installed; do not erase a working mod-loader command indiscriminately.[1]
